Ballerina Movie Overview

Ballerina is a revenge thriller directed by Chung-Hyun Lee. The movie follows Ok-ju, a former bodyguard trying to move on from her traumatic past. When she discovers her best friend’s body and a note begging for revenge, Ok-ju embarks on a mission to take down a criminal operation that traffics young women into sex slavery.

The fight scenes are well done, and the film is beautiful, so it isn’t a complete waste of time for adult genre fans. However, it is unlikely to find long-term success when it’s up against productions like John Wick. Ballerina has a running time of 92 minutes and was released in theaters on October 6, 2023.

The Story:

The movie’s simple story is beautifully shot and stylishly choreographed, but it lacks the cohesion of better movies in this genre, putting it squarely in the middle of the pack. While Jun Jong-seo’s performance as Ok-ju is great, her character lacks the necessary development for the audience to connect with her. We get almost no backstory for her aside from her friendship with Min-hee, and she has no motivations outside of revenge. She’s essentially just a stoic killing machine, which is fine during the action sequences but lacks the depth to take the movie to another level.

Ji-hun Kim’s villain, Pro Choi, is delightfully evil but terribly flat. He has no motivation to speak of any character traits other than apparent psychopathy. With the expected high amounts of violence and profanity, as well as the themes around sex trafficking and sexual assault, this movie is not recommended for most audiences. Even those fans of the revenge genre will probably find this entry lacking the emotional depth needed to add urgency and humanity to a story.
